Hey, girl, hey! I’m back! Did you miss me??

So, where have I been, you ask? Oh, I’ve been around. Just too lazy to write anything, but I have been working on content for the site! June gifted San Francisco with some amazing weather, so I was out and about with my friend Kerry and her monkey, Sloane (by monkey, I mean the cutest 2 year old EVER!). They live near Noe Valley, so we like to take walks with Sloane and hang out in the sun whenever we had the chance.

It’s also birthday season come June/July, including mine and my husband’s birthdays! My husband and I share the same birthday, how crazy is that?! I love sharing a birthday with him, he won’t ever forget, that’s for sure! Plus, our birthday is the day before a huge national holiday AND we share it with Tom Cruise (which used to excite me more when I was younger and pre-Katie Holmes days…what happened to him?!?!).

For my birthday this year, I wanted flowers. Permanent flowers. My husband gifted me with these:

California Poppies by the awesome Katie Gray!

Two and a half hours later, voila! It was the longest I ever sat for a tattoo, and I was gritting my teeth the last hour. Meditation helped a little, but it’s hard to focus when there’s a needle on your calf! The leg takes longer to heal due to blood flow when you’re standing vertically, so I swelled up pretty badly the first week if I was on my feet too long. The night of my birthday party, I didn’t notice I had a huge cankle until I went to change for my party. I had to elevate my leg most of the night, I felt like a bad hostess, but my friends were so awesome about it!

Karl the fog comes to visit in July, so leaving the house is harder. I’ve been interviewing a lot lately, so I’ll share some of my interview outfits in upcoming posts, as well as some San Francisco “summer” outfits (aka Winter 2). I also picked up some awesome new foundation by Tarte that I will review for a Make-Up Monday post. So stay tuned folks! Ms. Jones is back!

If you’re interested in getting tattooed by the awesome artist who did mine, check out Katie Gray’s work. She’s working out of One Shot Tattoo in SF’s Inner Sunset. Katie is crazy good, she’s super versatile as well (just go check her stuff out already!).

Brushes are just as important as the make-up you put on your face. Invest in good brushes, and your make-up will go on easier and look better.

In no particular order, here are my top 5 brushes!

Let’s start with the face. My favorite foundation brush is the Tarte Airbrush Finish Bamboo Foundation Brush.

Tarte Airbrush Bamboo Foundation Brush – $32USD

I hadn’t loved a foundation brush until I came across this one. I love the heft of the handle, so you can really buff your foundation into your skin. It’s harder to buff with a thin handle, like most other foundation brushes. I use less product when using this brush as well, since the brush blends so well.  The bristles are super soft and make-up application is quick with this brush.

I’ve been really into bronzer lately, and I couldn’t figure out which brush to use for applying the product. Since I’m fair, I don’t need a lot of product, so a traditional blush brush wouldn’t work. Then I remembered I have the baby sister of another awesome foundation brush, the MAC 188 small duo fibre face brush!

MAC 188 Small Duo Fibre Face Brush- $35USD

The larger version of this brush is the 187, which is great for foundation application and other creamy face products. The 188 is the perfect size to use under the cheekbones. Plus, since the white bristles are sparser than the base bristles, the brush won’t pick up as much product, so you have better control of how much you apply to your face.  I would also use this brush for blush, if I wasn’t so in love with the next brush on my list.
Real Techniques Blush Brush

Real Techniques Blush Brush – $8.99USD

Who says you have to spend $40+ on a brush! If you’re on the lookout for some great quality and affordable brushes, check out the Real Techniques line by Samantha Chapman (of Pixiwoo!). This blush brush beats out my MAC blush brushes hands down. The bristles are synthetic fibers, hand-cut and SO soft! I love that the end bristles are white, so you can see how much product you’ve picked up on your brush.  There is also little fallout with these brushes, which I can’t say the same for my other face brushes! I also have the Powder brush from this collection which is just as soft and applies wonderfully.

Moving onto eyes, I feel like you can get away with just one to two eye brushes, but that’s me! One of my favorites is the MAC 217 blending brush. I love this brush so much that I have two!

MAC 217 Blending Brush – $23USD

I use this brush for more than just blending, I use it to apply shadow to my lid and brow bone as well. I use one brush for the lighter base colors and the other for crease blending. This brush can be used with creamy or powder products. It’s definitely a great brush to have in your arsenal and is worth the investment.

Last, but not least, the MAC 210 Eye Liner brush.

MAC 210 Precise Eye Liner Brush – $19USD

For the longest time I used the 266 to apply my gel liner, and it was always a hot mess! I could never get the line thing enough and I’d always end up with massive cat eyes. Then I found the 210! This brush is AWESOME! I can apply the thinnest line of liner to my eye with ease. So many eye liner brushes are too thick for applying liner (I’m looking at you Smashbox!), so this little tool is perfect for those who want more control over their liner application.

So, there you have it, my top 5 brushes! What are your favorite brushes? Do you have a favorite brand?

xoxo

I have been bad about getting my Monday posts out on time. Mondays aren’t easy for us non-working folk either!

After sharing my new favorite BB cream, I thought I’d share my favorite products in my make-up drawer.  I keep my daily make-up routine pretty simple, using 3 of my top 5 products every day.  My routine now includes the Dr. Jart+ BB cream that I reviewed last week (and I’m still loving it a week later), concealer, powder, eye brow pencil, eye shadow, blush, mascara and a moisturizing lip tint.

First up, MAC Eyebrow Pencil:

MAC Eye Brows

This product is probably my most essential! I wasn’t blessed with naturally full and dark brows, I inherited my mother’s light blonde and sparse brows. It probably didn’t help that I started plucking my brows at 17, but this pencil has been a savior to my beauty routine for many years. It’s by far the best eyebrow pencil I have tried, the formula is perfect! Most brow pencils tend to be on the waxy side, which doesn’t work for the sparse hairs. I need a pencil that has more pigmentation to give the illusion I have eyebrows! This pencil is self-propelling and self-sharpening, making for easy application. There’s nothing worse than a dull eyebrow pencil! This pencil comes in 5 shades, so there’s a shade for everyone. I use Lingering, which is kind of a dark blonde. I’ve tried auburn brow pencils and they come off too orange, Lingering is soft taupe brown and shows more neutral on my skin. It’s great for red heads, blondes and brunettes, but I really think it depends on your skin tone and hair color. If you have thicker brows, this will work to fill in the gaps you may have in your brows, and the plus side is the pencil will last you longer since thick brows require less product 🙂

Next on my list of top products is the Naked 2 Palette by Urban Decay.

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette

I love love love this palette so much, which is rare for me to say because I am a MAC girl at heart. While I’m not a fan of the brush that came with the set, the shadows more than make up for it.  I use the first, third and fifth shadows the most (Foxy, Booty Call, Tease), they’re great everyday colors  . I use the darker colors occasionally, and the color payoff is great! They’re all very pigmented, though the glitter shadows tend to have a lot of fallout. The colors in this palette will work on all skin tones, that’s another reason it’s awesome!

Onto cheeks!

NARS Deep Throat Blush

My favorite NARS blush is Deep Throat, a shimmery peach with good pigmentation. All of my NARS blushes are long-lasting and you only need to use a little product. Their most popular blush is Orgasm, which I also own, but veer towards Deep Throat more because it’s less frosty. I use this on the apples of my cheeks and blend it up the cheekbone.

Finding a good mascara is really hard! I have watery eyes, so waterproof is a must. That limits my choices, which sucks because there are some great mascaras out there I can’t use, argh! Any time a new waterproof mascara comes out I usually run out to buy it. It usually disappoints, like so many others, but I always come back to this one when I’m between finding a new “holy grail” of mascara:

L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara

This is, by far, my favorite mascara. L’Oreal Voluminous mascara’s formula dries soft, comes off easy with make-up remover and of course you can’t beat the price. Since it’s so cheap, I can buy a couple and keep one in my purse for emergencies. I also tend to run out of time when I get ready in the morning and will end up putting mascara on the bus while going to an appointment (haha). Another great thing about this product is it’s great for sensitive eyes. On top of watery eyes, they’re also really sensitive and many mascaras irritate my eyes, however the L’Oreal mascara doesn’t! Hooray! The nice thing about it is you can layer it on depending on how dramatic you want your lashes to look. I usually do 1-2 coats, but it’s such a flexible formula, a third coat wouldn’t look spiky at all.

Last, but not least, lips! My friend Katy will attest to how many lipsticks I actually have. A drawer full and I know the name and shade of each one ha ha! The funny thing is, I don’t wear lipstick often, if I do it’s usually red or fuchsia. It’s such a pain to touch up throughout the day, so I end up using this product a LOT. Low and behold: Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint

Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in “Enchanted”

Tarte makes some amazing products, and their lip products have to be some of my favorites. I own three of these lip tints in different shades; Enchanted (shown above), Amused (sheer fuchsia) and Lust (sheer red). They don’t really tint the lips for a long time, so you have to reapply often, but it’s more like a tinted lip balm than a lipstick, so it’s actually good for your lips! Having three shades allows me to wear this product with any look. I layer it with a matching lip liner if I want more color payoff. It is a little on the pricey side ($24), but it’s well-worth the price.  I haven’t finished one yet and I use them often!

So, there are my top 5 products. I’d love to review more products, if you have any ideas, feel free to email me!

xoxo

I’m going to follow the lovely Keiko Lynn’s lead and start doing a Make-up Monday. Make-up is the finishing touch to an outfit. Whether it’s a full face or just some mascara and lip gloss, it is key (to me!).

It’s no secret that I love make-up (MAC particularly), I would say I have a collection of beauty products! My daily routine now is pretty minimal compared to how much I used to wear in my 20’s. I would wear full foundation and pretty intense eye make-up nearly every day. Nowadays, I wear minimal coverage on my face and neutral eye make-up. BB creams are all the craze right now, and for good reason! For daily use, BB creams can potentially replace the moisturizer and foundation in your routine. A BB cream is a tinted moisturizer with extra benefits. It contains SPF, disguises blemishes, and soothes and moisturizes skin—some versions even contain anti-aging properties! They’re great for those of you with oily skin, most BB creams cater to oily skin. I have pretty dry skin and found that the Smashbox BB cream didn’t work for my skin. I went to Sephora this weekend and consulted with one of the lovely ladies, and she suggested two for my skin type. The first one was Dior’s Hydra Life BB creme. At $56, it was a little out of my price range. The next product came from Dr. Jart+

Great for dry skin!

I used it for the first time yesterday, and let me tell you, I LOVE it! With the Smashbox BB cream, I felt like it just sat on top of my skin and made me look cakey. This product went on smoothly and blended right in and evened out my skin tone. A few products on top and voila!

Fresh faced!

Not the best quality pic since it’s from my iPhone, but you get the idea!  Here is a run down of the products I used on my face:

Get the look: Youthful Wear Cosmeceutical Youth-Boosting Dark Circle Corrector + Concealer, MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural in Medium, MAC Mineralized Blush in Dainty, MAC Eyebrow Pencil in Lingering, Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes! Waterproof Mascara, Maybelline Fit Me Bronzer in Light Bronze

I’m really excited about adding this new feature on my blog.  If you have any requests or questions, let me know, I’d be happy to do a post!
